Interview Flow

To start, I give a brief intro which is often recorded after we talk. That way I can summarize what the listener will hear.

I purposely keep my intro brief because I have found the interviews are more interesting when the artist is able to tell their own story.

The interviews tend to be conversational and flexible. If the conversation leads to something not in the flow, that’s fine; if we run short on time, I just cut a few questions from the lightening round.

2. How you got started:

These questions are intended to get us talking about the early days of your career without asking "How long have you been painting?" or "When did you decide to become an artist?" Those questions tend to elicit similar responses.

The first question will be ONE of the following.

Tell me a little bit about when you decided to go “pro” in the sense of when did you decide to dedicate yourself to your art. Give us a little example of what that meant to you. (What pushed your artwork from amateur level to professional?)

Was there an artist you admired when you were young that inspired you to be an artist yourself?

Do you remember the first painting you did that you were really proud of? That painting that made you say, 'Yes, this is my calling; I am an artist'

3. Personal Success:

Was there a moment or a decision you made in your career that you feel was a personal success?

What memorable responses have you had to your work?

4. Set-back.

Can you share a story of a time in your journey when you encountered a big set-back or experienced failure, and most importantly, what did you take away from that experience?

5. Current Project:

What are you working on right now, or what are you currently obsessed with?

6. Lightening Round:

I pick 4 to 5 of these questions to wrap up the interview.

• What is your dream project? If there were no restrictions on time or money what would you create?
• If you could own a piece of art by any living artist, what would it be (or whose)?
• What’s the one painting you’ve painted that you will always keep?
• What book would you recommend to Savvy Painters?
• What are you reading right now?
• How do you keep your creative spark/ What keeps you fascinated?
• What is your favorite museum?
• How do you see the art market changing in the next 5 years?
• What advice would you give to yourself the artist you were 10 years ago?
• Can you describe a single habit that you strongly believe contributes to your success?

How to Look and sound great in the interview

We will record the podcast live using both audio and video. Please make sure you are in a quiet space with no interruptions. Avoid large spaces with blank walls and hard floors as this will cause your voice to echo. 

LIGHTING:

Make sure your face is well lit. If the interview is scheduled during daylight hours,

the easiest way to ensure proper lighting is to sit facing a window. Please make sure you are not backlit - that will cause you to show on camera as a silhouette.

SOUND QUALITY

I want you to sound your best, and I want our listeners to hear your story. For best results, use a microphone that is close to your mouth. A clip on mic or Apple Airpods work great, just make sure you have tested the connection. If using any devices that need charging, please  ensure that you have fully charged them before our scheduled time.

How to  your audio and video ahead of time
